BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team split its doubleheader against Berry College on Saturday, falling 17-0 in game one before taking a 3-2 victory over the Vikings in the second game.
The Panthers were run-ruled 17-0 in Saturday's first game, allowing 14 hits to the Vikings in the loss.
Senior Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound, allowing nine runs—four earned—off seven hits. He walked three batters and struck out six in his four and two-thirds innings pitched.
Four other Panther pitchers came in in relief roles, allowing eight more runs.
BSC could not get anything going offensively in the first game, managing five hits but leaving six runners stranded.
Birmingham-Southern fared much better in game two, taking the win 3-2.
The Panthers scored all three runs in the third inning with Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) and Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) hitting RBI singles and then a throwing error by Berry bringing in another run scored by Wise.
Berry scored single runs in the third and fifth innings, but a good outing by starter John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) and a shutdown performance by reliever Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) kept the BSC lead intact.
Shirley, who pitched five innings, picked up his fourth win of the season. Misischia finished out the last two innings, earning his fourth save of the season.
After the doubleheader split, the Panthers stand at 19-9 overall and 6-5 in the SAA. BSC and Berry will wrap up the series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1 p.m.
