BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated Southern Athletic Association foe Sewanee 5-3 on Friday night to improve to 27-11 overall and 13-6 in the conference.
After about a two-hour rain delay from the original start, the Panthers got the game going with a three-run bottom of the first to take an early lead. A Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) double and a Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) single scored the first two runs of the game with a Sewanee error allowing Will Toner (Atlanta, Ga./Marist HS) to cross home from second and cap the scoring in the inning.
The Panthers would add another run in the third off a Hamel home run, his team-leading fifth of the season, and score their final run in the seventh inning when Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) came in from third after a Wise single.
Right-hander Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound for BSC, tossing seven innings. Cook picked up the win with his performance, allowing three runs off nine hits, while striking out nine Tiger batters. The win was the senior's sixth of the season.
Junior righty Robbie Lively (Helena, Ala./Southern Union) came in in relief and picked up the six-out save, his fourth of the year.
BSC and Sewanee will pick up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The Panthers will look to secure hosting rights for the SAA tournament and potentially the title of SAA regular season champions.
Saturday will also serve as Senior Day for Birmingham-Southern. Eight seniors will be recognized before game one of the doubleheader.
