BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 25-ranked Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated the Sewanee Tigers 11-10 in the opening round of the 2019 Southern Athletic Association Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Panthers won the game in walk-off fashion after a throwing error by the Sewanee third baseman scored A.J. Hunt (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) from third base.
BSC, which had 14 hits in the game, was led offensively by Preston Munns (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS), Hunt and Alfredo Granier (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal School), who each had two RBIs each. Munns also had three hits, including a two-run home run in the sixth, and three runs scored.
Senior Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) got the start on the mound, pitching five innings. Three other Panthers came in in relief of Cook to finish out the game with senior Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) picking up the win.
The win advanced BSC to the quarterfinal round of the SAA Tournament to face the winner of No. 3 seed Berry and No. 6 seed Oglethorpe.
