BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team punched its ticket to the 2019 Southern Athletic Association Tournament Championship series on Sunday afternoon after beating Oglethorpe 4-3 in the semifinal round.
BSC's third game of the tournament, which will put them in the championship series against Rhodes next weekend, ended in the same fashion as the first two games: Walk-off victories.
A walk-off error by Sewanee and a walk-off single by Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) gave the Panthers the wins in their first two games of the tournament. On Sunday, BSC pulled out the victory thanks to a blasted three-run home run by Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park HS) in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Down 3-1 to start the bottom half of the final inning, Steadman and Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) both walked making Wise the go-ahead run. Wise then found the pitch he wanted and sent it soaring over the wall in left center field.
Right-hander Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) pitched all nine innings and got the win, his seventh of the year. He struck out eight batters and allowed just one walk in the game.
After sweeping their way through their side of the bracket, the second-seeded Panthers will play host to the fourth-seeded Rhodes Lynx in the SAA Tournament Championship series May 4-5. Game times are TBA.
