Misischia Headlines Baseball's 11 All-SAA Selections

ATLANTA – Eleven Birmingham-Southern baseball student-athletes were selected to 2019 All-Southern Athletic Association Teams, the conference announced on Tuesday.

The Panther selections were highlighted by senior reliever Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS), who garnered Pitcher of the Year and First Team honors. It is the third time Misischia has earned all-conference recognition.

Through the regular season and SAA Tournament, Misischia has 17 appearances, including two starts, and is 8-1 with six saves. His eight wins are a league-high and his six saves are third best in the conference. Misischia also has a 1.77 ERA in 40.2 innings pitched and has recorded 50 strikeouts.

Joining Misischia on the All-SAA First Team are designated hitter Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS), outfielder Cole Steadman (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian), starting pitcher Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) and starting pitcher Andy Hammond (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS).

Hamel hit .326 this season with 30 RBI, 29 runs scored and seven home runs, which is second best in the SAA. BSC's leadoff man Steadman had the team's best batting average at .363 and also had 29 RBI, 35 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.

Cook, the SAA Pitcher of the Year last season, finished up the regular season and SAA Tournament with a record of 6-2 and an ERA of 3.42 in 76.1 innings pitched. Cook recorded 63 strikeouts, third most in the conference.

Hammond, who has a 7-2 record, is second-most in wins behind his teammate Misischia. He recorded a 3.32 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 62.1 innings pitched so far this season.

Catcher A.J. Hunt (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis Univ. School), first baseman Tyler Wise (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park) and starting pitcher John Michael Shirley (Mobile, Ala./UMS-Wright Prep) was picked for All-SAA Second Team honors.

Hunt is hitting .293 with 16 RBI, 28 runs scored and 12 stolen bases while Wise, who has appeared in every game for BSC, is .326 at the plate with 42 RBI, 37 runs scored and five home runs.

On the mound, Shirley holds a 5-2 record with a 3.00 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched.

Wrapping up BSC's all-conference selections were Honorable Mentions shortstop Alfredo Granier (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal), third baseman Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) and reliever Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS).

Granier and Williams are hitting .317 and .318, respectively, this season. Williams has four home runs and a team-high 14 stolen bases.

Mauldin has made 13 appearances has a 4-1 record, one save, 26 strikeouts and a 1.02 ERA in 35.1 innings pitched.

Birmingham-Southern's 11 all-conference selection led all teams and is the most all-conference selections for the Panthers since joining the SAA.

BSC will continue its season in the NCAA Regionals. The NCAA Selection Show will air on Sunday, May 12.
