Three Panthers Earn All-Region Honors, Weisberg Coach of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three Birmingham-Southern baseball student-athletes and head coach Jan Weisberg received All-South Region honors, the organization announced on Thursday.

Senior designated hitter Tyler Hamel (Atlanta, Ga./Alpharetta HS) and senior reliever Richie Misischia (Dothan, Ala./Regis HS) earned First Team All-Region recognition, while senior starting pitcher Jake Cook (Oxford, Ala./Oxford HS) was named to the Third Team.

Hamel, a First Team All-Southern Athletic Association designated hitter, leads the Panthers in home runs with nine this season, including two in the NCAA Regional against LaGrange. He is hitting .338 on the year with 10 doubles, 34 runs scored and 42 RBI. This is Hamel's first time on the all-region team.

Misischia, the 2019 SAA Pitcher of the Year as a reliever and an all-conference First Team selection, led the Panthers in wins and saves this season with eight and six, respectively, in the regular season. He also had one of the lowest ERAs among Panthers pitchers and it currently sits at 2.31. Misischia previously made the all-region team back in 2017, when he was voted on to the Second Team as a utility player.

Cook, another All-SAA First Team selection, was BSC's No. 1 starter this season, starting 14 games and compiling a 7-2 record so far this season. He has a 3.61 ERA in 82.1 innings pitched and has struck out 68 total strikeouts – 7.43 strikeouts per nine innings. This is Cook's second appearance on the all-region team as he was selected to the Third Team last season.

This is head coach Jan Weisberg's first All-South Region Coach of the Year award. Weisberg has led this Panthers team to a 37-13 record heading into BSC's first-ever NCAA Super Regional appearance against Coe College on May 24-25.
