CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – No. 15 Birmingham-Southern baseball could not find an answer to a late rally from No. 6 Chapman University Tuesday afternoon in game two of the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship series as they fell 11-0 in Veterans Memorial Stadium. BSC (42-15) set a new program record for wins and finished the highest any team ever has in the Division III era.
Hanan Mauldin (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) was shutting down Chapman until the bottom of the sixth inning when back-to-back fielding errors put runners on base. Chapman would score the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left field. Mauldin went six innings, allowing no earned runs and no hits to either of the 21 batters he faced.
The Panthers combined for six hits on the day and were knocking on the door. But Chapman was able to get out of every scoring opportunity.
BSC was led offensively by Alfredo Granier (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal) at the World Series. He averaged .444 at the plate and finished with a team-high eight hits. Mauldin finished the tournament with a 0.00 ERA. He pitched 10.1 innings and allowed only one hit in two appearances. For their performance at the World Series, Granier and Brian Williams (Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS) were named to the all-tournament team.
