Panthers singing the blues in Memphis, fall 35-7 at RhodesBox Score
MEMPHIS –The Birmingham-Southern (1-2, 0-1 SCAC) football team traveled to the Bluff City on Saturday to open its SCAC schedule with the Lynx of Rhodes College (1-1, 1-0 SCAC). The Panthers had trouble getting their offense going, falling to the Lynx, 35-7, and giving Rhodes its first win of the season in its home opener.
Rhodes struck first on the afternoon with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Brad Muller for the early 7-0 lead. The Panthers’ only first-quarter chance came on their third drive after Brad Stockdale recovered a Rhodes fumble at the 27 yard line. But, three plays and two sacks later, BSC had to settle for the field goal. Jared Spooner’s 33-yard attempt drifted wide right to keep the Panthers off the board in the first.
The Panther defense came up big to start the second quarter, holding the driving Lynx to a field goal, giving Rhodes the 10-0 lead. Two drives later, however, the Lynx scored again, pushing the Rhodes advantage to 17. The half didn’t get any better for BSC after a bad snap on a punt attempt with seven minutes to go in the half which gave Rhodes the ball on the 18 yard line that was then converted into an easy six on the next play. David Kelley recovered another Lynx fumble with just over two minutes to go in the half, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize as Rhodes took a 24-0 advantage into the locker room at the break.
Brad Stockdale came up with an interception on Rhodes’ first drive of the half which stopped the almost-certain Lynx score. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Rhodes returned the favor two plays later with an interception of their own. From there they booted another field goal to give Rhodes the 27-0 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Panthers were finally able to get on the board with 7:21 left in the game when Chandler Bares connected with Tay Walker on a 23-yard pass into the end zone. Jared Spooner’s kick was good to give Southern seven points. The play capped a 12-play, 59-yard drive, preventing the shutout. Rhodes answered on the next drive with a safety on a punt attempt from deep in Panther territory. The scoring was capped by another Rhodes touchdown with just over a minute to play to put the final score at 35-7.
The Panthers will have another week off to prepare for their conference home opener against Trinity, October 4 at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala. Kick-off is scheduled for noon. Check back at BSCSports.net for continuing updates on all Panther Football news.
