BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - With spring practice in full swing, head coach Eddie Garfinkle has announced the Birmingham-Southern football team's 2009 schedule.
The team will play five home games, but begins the season on the road against LaGrange College on Sept. 5. Home games include a Sept. 12 date with Division I non-scholarship program Campbell University, as well as Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents Rhodes College on Sept. 26, Centre College on Oct. 10, and DePauw University on Oct. 31.
The Panthers added Huntingdon College for Homecoming on Nov. 7 after being forced to juggle the schedule with the announcement that Colorado College would no longer field a team.
"Although we did not plan on adding Huntingdon to the schedule until 2010, we are excited about playing an in-state rival, especially for our Homecoming game," Garfinkle said.
For road games, BSC travels to Texas, twice, facing Trinity University on Oct. 3 and Austin College on Oct. 17. The team also travels to Sewanee on Oct. 24 and Millsaps on Nov. 14 in the last game of the season.
As for spring practice, Division III teams are allowed only 16 practice sessions and are not allowed to wear pads.
"Even though we can't wear pads and are doing a lot of non-contact drills, we've still accomplished a lot as far as installing our offensive and defensive packages, as well as our kicking game," Garfinkle said.
