Garfinkle pleased with offensive efforts in first preseason scrimmage

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern football team held its first preseason scrimmage of the 2008 season, Saturday, at the BSC Athletic Complex. Head Coach Eddie Garfinkle was satisfied with the offense, particularly the play of quarterbacks Joe Thigpen and Chandler Bares, as well as the performance of the offensive line.

“We were pleased overall with today’s scrimmage,” Garfinkle said. “We ran about 50 plays with the one offense against the one defense, then about 50 more with the twos against the twos, and we also mixed it up some with the ones against the twos and vice versa. We also ran about 30 plays with the threes. Everyone got reps today.

“I was very pleased with the offensive line, they have worked hard this summer, got stronger in the weight room, and it shows,” Garfinkle continued. “The performance of the quarterbacks also stood out today, they showed great leadership in executing the offense.

“I was also really pleased with our vertical passing game, which is something we’ve worked very hard on.”

On the defensive side, BSC lost most of its starters from last season and is still finding its footing.

“Defensively, we’re sort of starting over,” Garfinkle said. “I was a little disappointed today because, to be honest, we didn’t see a lot of hits out there. We’re very young on that side of the ball, a lot of the new players are thinking instead of reacting, and that takes away from their aggressiveness.”

After the scrimmage, the team held its second annual luncheon for the players and their families in the Bruno Great Hall on BSC’s campus.

The Panthers are off tomorrow but return to the field for week two of preseason camp on Monday, practicing at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
