Panthers open home slate against LaGrange, Saturday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After opening the season with a 12-6 win against Campbell this past Saturday on the road, the Birmingham-Southern football team opens its home schedule against LaGrange College, Saturday, Sept. 6, at noon at Thompson Reynolds Stadium on the campus of Vestavia Hills High School in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
Sophomore quarterback Joe Thigpen led the BSC charge on Saturday with 158 yards, passing for 105 yards and rushing for 53. Thigpen scored on a one-yard run and then found freshman wide out Luke Chapman with a 48-yard pass, both in the fourth quarter to give the Panthers the 12-6 win.
The Panthers have switched up their practice protocol for this year, cutting back on practice hours to accommodate for more time for the players to devote to academics. Sundays are off days, while Mondays are devoted to team meetings, academic meetings, and weight lifting. Tuesdays are practices in full pads, Wednesdays and Thursdays are practices in shells (shorts and shoulder pads), while Fridays are practices in shorts. Practices run from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and, according to head coach Eddie Garfinkle, “as long as the players come ready to work and have a great attitude, three hours is plenty.”
LaGrange opens its season against BSC on Saturday after struggling with a 0-10 record in 2007. Sophomore quarterback Drew Carter led the Panthers last year with 1,560 yards and six touchdowns, and junior running back Mario Wallace is LaGrange’s leading rushing returner, having rushed for 445 yards in 2007 with two touchdowns.
Saturday’s game will feature a live game tracker available at www.bscsports.net, as well as live audio by LaGrange’s radio crew, available online at www.gridirongameoftheweek.com.
