Garfinkle announces weekly award winners after LaGrange game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern head football coach Eddie Garfinkle announced the team’s weekly award winners after the team’s 34-31 loss to LaGrange, Saturday.

Garfinkle and his staff also watched game film with the team today, emphasizing areas where the Panthers need more work.

“Today we showed the players the video of the LaGrange game and lifted weights,” Garfinkle said. “Offensively, we played good enough to win, but we had some miscues at inopportune times. A lot of mistakes occurred defensively and in the kicking game. We stressed to the players two points: when you have a 12 point lead in the fourth quarter, you can't relax and think that the game is won; and mental preparation is just as important as physical preparation. Our weekly preparation did not go well toward the end of last week.”

Offensive awards for the LaGrange game went to sophomore quarterback Joe Thigpen (Hammer Award – Offensive Player of the Game), sophomore running back Walter Arrington (Racehorse Award – Offensive Skill Player of the Game), and freshman fullback Austin Tunnell (Knockdown Award – Most Offensive Knockdowns). Defensive awards went to freshman defensive end Bryan Jackson (The Beast Award – Defensive Player of the Game) and freshman defensive back Stephen Wilson (Big Hit Award – Hardest Hit of the Game). Freshman kicker Jared Spooner received the Special Forces Award (Special Teams Player of the Game).

The Panthers are off this week but return to action next Saturday, Sept. 20, traveling to face Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
