BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern football team opens its 2009 home schedule this Saturday, Sept. 12, as it takes on Campbell at noon at Panther Stadium.
BSC (0-1) returns to the gridiron after a heartbreaking 30-27 road loss to LaGrange College last Saturday. LaGrange's kicker made his fourth field goal of the game as time expired to give LC the three-point victory. Juniors #David Langston# and #Walter Arrington# led with 114 and 113 all-purpose yards, respectively, and Langston also led with 70 yards rushing on four carries. Junior quarterback #Joe Thigpen# was 12-for-18 for 150 yards and two touchdown passes. Sophomore #Eric Nordgren# led with 81 receiving yards on three catches. Senior kicker Raymond Josof made three of his four extra point attempts, with the fourth one being blocked by LaGrange. On defense, junior linebacker Ryan Carelson led the defense with nine tackles, and junior defensive back Trae Strain had a pass break-up and a fumble recovery. Sophomore Sam Bratt also had a sack.
Campbell, which is only its second season of Division I non-scholarship football since re-starting the program in 2008, defeated Methodist University last weekend, 44-28, at home. Quarterback Matt Vollono led the Camel offense, going 10-13-1 with 219 yards and four touchdowns. C.J. Oates was the rush leader, gaining 95 yards on 14 carries, and Carl Smith posted 67 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown. Harrison Jordan led Campbell with three catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns.
This will be the second meeting between the two programs after BSC traveled to Buies Creek, N.C., in 2008 for the season opener, winning 12-6 in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,845 fans.
Saturday's game will feature a live game tracker, available here. Campbell also offers live streaming audio, available here for a small fee.
