BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern football team took to the road this weekend, traveling to San Antonio, Texas, to face conference rival Trinity University, Saturday, at 12:30 p.m. CT.
BSC stands at 2-1 on the season, having won its last two games at home against Campbell University and Rhodes College. Junior quarterback Joe Thigpen leads the Panther offense with 365 yards and is 25-47-2 with three touchdowns. Junior tailback Walter Arrington leads the team with 265 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 45 carries, followed by freshman running back Shawn Morris with 244 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. Sophomore and senior wide receivers Eric Nordgren and Tay Walker lead BSC with 101 yards on six catches and 100 yards on five catches, respectively, and a touchdown apiece. On defense, junior linebacker Ryan Carelson leads with 19 tackles (11 solo, 8 assisted). Five different Panthers, including Carelson, have snagged interceptions.
Trinity is 3-1 on the season, having most recently lost to No. 24 Millsaps College on the road. Robert Davidson leads the Tigers with 370 yards passing and is 61-35-0 with two touchdowns. Chris Baer leads Trinity on the ground with 210 yards rushing and one touchdown on 47 attempts. Riley Curry also leads with 304 yards and two touchdowns on 22 catches. Dennis Grebe leads the Tiger defense with 28 tackles (14 solo, 14 assisted).
Saturday's game will be the third meeting between the two programs, with Trinity holding a 2-0 record against the Panthers. Last season, the Tigers defeated BSC 48-20 at Regions Park in Hoover.
