BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern football team returns to the friendly confines of Panther Stadium this weekend for a Halloween showdown with conference rival DePauw University, Saturday at noon.
The Panthers stand at 4-3 on the season, while the Tigers are 5-1 and tied for first place in the SCAC standings. DePauw holds a 2-0 all-time record over BSC.
Junior quarterback Joe Thigpen has racked up 819 passing yards and 287 rushing yards so far this season, with five passing touchdowns and three on the ground. He is 58-of-121 with five interceptions and has recorded 110 carries. Freshman tailback Shawn Morris leads BSC with 386 yards rushing and six touchdowns on 55 carries, followed closely by junior tailback Walter Arrington with 377 yards and six touchdowns on 72 carries. Junior wide receiver David Langston leads the team with 241 yards receiving and a touchdown on 15 catches, as well as 744 all-purpose yards and six total touchdowns.
Sophomore defensive back Andrew Shannon leads the BSC defense with 39 tackles (19 solo, 20 assisted), followed by sophomore defensive lineman Bryan Jackson with 38 tackles (a team-high 25 solo and 13 assisted), and senior linebacker Victor Allen, also with 38 tackles (13 solo, 25 assisted).
For DePauw, quarterback Spud Dick leads with 1,458 passing yards and is 122-of-172 with four interceptions and 16 touchdowns. He has also rushed for two touchdowns. Derrick Karazsia leads the Tigers with 440 yards rushing and a touchdown on 106 carries, followed by Jon Ellis with 387 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 93 carries. Alex Koors leads the receivers with 793 yards and nine touchdown receptions on 36 catches. Thomas Wrona leads the DePauw defense with 35 tackles (27 solo, eight assisted).
Fans attending Saturday’s game will want to be aware that the Magic City Classic will also be taking place at Legion Field at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, and that traffic will be heavy.
