Five Panthers earn SCAC post-season football honors
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Five members of the 2009 Birmingham-Southern football team have earned All-Conference honors, as announced today by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference office.
Junior tailback Walter Arrington, junior offensive lineman Ryan Creel, sophomore defensive lineman Bryan Jackson, sophomore defensive back Andrew Shannon, and junior quarterback Joe Thigpen all earned Second-Team honors, as voted by the league’s head coaches.
Arrington led the team in rushing yards with 636 on 115 carries, and was second on the team with eight touchdowns. He also had 226 yards receiving on 19 catches, and led the team with 1,523 all-purpose yards. Arrington earned First-Team All-SCAC honors last season as a sophomore, and in 2007 was named SCAC Newcomer of the Year and Second-Team All-Conference.
Creel helped lead an offensive line for a BSC team that ranked second in the SCAC in rushing offense in 2009 with 198.8 yards a game, as well as fourth in the SCAC in scoring offense, averaging 27.8 points per game.
Jackson recorded 42 total tackles this season, including 25 solo tackles, and led the team with 11 tackles-for-loss. He also recorded two sacks, two pass breakups, and two quarterback hurries.
Shannon led the BSC defense with 56 total tackles, including a team-high 30 solo tackles. He also had two fumble recoveries, two tackles-for-loss, and an interception.
Thigpen went 87-of-177 with five touchdown passes for 1,205 yards this season. He was also third on the team with 468 rushing yards as well as six touchdowns on the ground. This marks Thigpen’s third straight season earning Second-Team All-SCAC honors.
