Coach Garfinkle had this to say about his new assistant, "Coach Martin has coached on both sides of the ball. We are fortunate that the offense he is bringing from Auburn is very similar to what we have been doing the past two years."
The Shawnee, Oklahoma native comes to The Hilltop after serving as the Quality Control Assistant on the offensive staff at Auburn University under Tiger Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn. Martin helped guide two All-SEC Linemen in Lee Ziemba and Ryan Pugh, as well as helping the Tigers to an 8-5 record and an Outback Bowl Championship.
Prior to his stint at Auburn, Martin served three seasons in Conference USA from 2006-2008. Martin served as a graduate assistant on Rice University’s defensive staff, helping the Owls to a 7-6 record and an appearance in the 2006 New Orleans Bowl. Corners Brandon King and Ja’Corey Shepherd were named All-C-USA Corners under Martin’s direction.
In his two seasons as a graduate assistant at Tulsa, The Golden Hurricane went 21-7 from 2007-08 and won the C-USA West Championship both seasons as well as the 2007 and 2008 GMAC Bowl Championships. Martin worked with two All-C-USA Safeties, Steve Craver and Anthony Germany and three All-C-USA Linemen, Tyler Holmes, Rod Thomas, and Justin Morsey. Holmes was also named a Freshman All-American in 2008.
Martin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Central Oklahoma and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Tulsa. During his own playing career he was a four time letter-winner and starter for Central Oklahoma. He helped the Bronchos to two Lone Star Conference Championships in 1998 and 1999 as well as the Division II National Tournaments in both seasons. Chris is married to Stephanie Sliepen of St. Charles, Missouri. Stephanie played softball at the University of Tulsa.
