BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern football team continued its preseason camp Tuesday in Panther Stadium, with the veteran players practicing in the morning and the freshmen in the afternoon.
The players wore pads for the first time since the end of last season. "I thought for the first day in pads since November, our guys did a really good job of being physical," Head Coach Eddie Garfinkle said. "Our gains in the weight room are definitely helping us to become more physical on the field.
"Jake Robertson, a junior halfback that was moved to defensive end this year, shows a lot of ability in his new position and had a good practice today," Garfinkle continued. "He will be a great pass rusher in our league."
The Panthers will practice in shells again tomorrow before their first full-pads practice on Thursday at 4 p.m. The team will hold its annual inter-squad scrimmage and Parents Day on Saturday at 9 a.m., and kicks off the 2011 season on the road against LaGrange College on Sept. 3. The first home game is Sept. 10 against in-state rival Huntingdon College.
