BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern football team hosted its annual Family Day this morning, kicked off by the first intra-squad scrimmage of the 2012 preseason.

The team ran 130 plays in front of the crowd of friends and family, and overall Head Coach Eddie Garfinkle was pleased but says the squad has a ways to go before being ready for kick-off on Sept. 1 against LaGrange.

"The players gave good effort and competed, but at the same time we made mistakes that will get you beat," Garfinkle said.

"Defensively we gave up big plays for touchdowns and offensively we turned the ball over," he continued. "Those are things that we can correct if we come out next week and go to work.

"Quarterback Jimmy Stainback is having a really good preseason so far, and has become the leader of our offense. Defensively, we have not found the team chemistry that it takes to play great defense, which is becoming a concern."

The Panthers will not practice tomorrow but will hit the field again on Monday for another two-a-day, practicing in full pads at 9:30 a.m. and shells at 5 p.m.
