Football begins week two of 2012 preseason

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern football team began week two of the 2012 preseason today with a full-pads practice this morning and a kicking practice in shells at 5 p.m.

Head Coach Eddie Garfinkle said that the team installed its two-minute offense and defense and also worked on third-down blitz and goal-line situations. He also commented that it was a "spirited" practice, with several fights breaking out.

"I appreciate the players' enthusiasm and intensity," Garfinkle said. "Both sides got after each other. At the same time, I don't understand why players think it is okay to push and shove after the whistle blows. The whole idea of football is to see how hard you can hit the guy with an opposite colored jersey as hard as you can from the snap of the football through the echo of the whistle.

"Junior outside linebacker Artavious Birdsong stood out the last couple of practices," Garfinkle added.

The Panthers will practice in shells again tomorrow at 4 p.m. BSC opens the 2012 season at home on Sept. 1 against LaGrange at 1 p.m. in Panther Stadium.
