BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern football team resumes play after its off week, traveling to face conference rival Centre College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET in Danville, Ky.
The Panthers are 5-3 overall after dropping their last three games, and 1-1 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Colonels are 6-2 overall and also 1-1 in the SAA, riding a three-game win streak including a 17-0 victory against Austin College last weekend in Sherman, Texas.
BSC is 0-5 all-time against Centre. The Panthers lost 45-20 last season in Panther Stadium.
Senior quarterback Jimmy Stainback leads BSC with 1,333 yards and 11 touchdowns so far this season. He is 78-127 with six interceptions. Senior tailback Shawn Morris leads on the ground with 584 rushing yards and six touchdown on 107 carries, and sophomore Sam Vermilyea leads the receivers with 449 yards and six touchdowns on 19 receptions. On defense senior safety Andrew Shannon leads with 60 tackles (34 solo). Senior Jeffery Steele and sophomore Ty Keenum have two interceptions apiece, and senior Zack Lambert has three sacks.
For Centre, sophomore quarterback Heath Haden is 124-214 with 1,623 yards and 12 touchdowns as well as three interceptions. Senior running back Monte Scotton leads with 560 yards and seven touchdowns on 115 carries, and senior wide receiver Jason Osterman leads with 516 yards and four touchdowns on 32 catches. Senior linebacker Michael Bozarth and junior defensive back Erich Vogelsang lead the defense with 57 tackles apiece, and junior Casey Vatter leads with three interceptions. Sophomore Devon Freeman also leads with 4.5 sacks.
