BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern football team will open its home slate this weekend, hosting Hendrix College for the first Southern Athletic Association contest of the season, Saturday at 1 p.m. at Battle Field at Panther Stadium.
Both teams are 1-0 on the season. This will be the first meeting between the two programs; Hendrix is fielding a team for the first time since 1960.
BSC defeated LaGrange 59-38 last weekend on the road to open the season. Senior quarterback Tyson Beacham was 14-17 with 210 yards and three touchdown passes. Senior tailback Joe Moultrie, junior wide receiver Sam Vermilyea, and junior tailback Issac Nichols all recorded two touchdowns apiece. Junior safety Ty Keenum also scored on an interception return, one of his two picks, earning SAA Defensive Player of the Week honors as well as a spot on the D3football.com National Team of the Week. Keenum, junior LaPrintence Gunn, and sophomore A.J. Ford all had six tackles each to lead the Panther defense.
Hendrix opened its season last week with a last-second 46-44 win against Westminster College, winning on a field goal with one second left in the game. Freshman quarterback Seth Peters was 26-41 with two interceptions, 324 yards and four touchdowns. Freshmen running backs Dayton Winn and Thomas Weissert scored touchdowns, as did junior wide receiver Casey Caton, freshmen receivers Travus McMahon and Caleb Brake, and freshman tight end Doug Phillips. Freshman defensive back Matt Ramirez and freshman linebacker Ben Cunningham led the defense with 10 tackles each, including a sack by Cunningham.
