BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern football team returns to the Hilltop this weekend for its second home game of the 2013 campaign, hosting No. 11 Wesley College at 1 p.m. on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.
The Panthers are unbeaten at 3-0, while the Wolverines are 2-1 after falling to No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor last weekend. This will be the second meeting between the programs, after BSC, ranked 11th at the time, traveled to Dover, Del., last year and lost 26-17 to sixth-ranked Wesley.
BSC returns to the gridiron after a big win last weekend in DeLand, Fla., where they beat Division I Stetson University 49-34. Senior quarterback Tyson Beacham had 206 yards, going 18-32 with two touchdowns, and junior tailback Issac Nichols led with 201 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Junior Michael Cowan led the receivers with 78 yards on seven catches. The Panther defense had five interceptions, led by junior William Weller with two, and senior lineback Cameron Budzius led with nine tackles, all solo.
For the year so far, Beacham is 54-77 with 679 yards and seven scores. Nichols leads the rushers with 332 yards and five touchdowns on 44 carries, and Cowan leads with 225 yards receiving, although junior Sam Vermilyea leads with three touchdown catches. Budzius and junior Devante Smith lead the defense with 19 tackles apiece.
Wesley, ranked 11th by D3football.com and 14th by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) this week, is led by sophomore quarterback Joe Callahan with 922 yards and six touchdowns. Senior running back Brandon Wright has 70 rushing yards to lead the team but no touchdowns yet this season; junior Eugene Byrd, sophomore Kennard Squirrel, and sophomore Rick Jackson have one touchdown apiece on the ground. Junior receiver Steve Koudossou leads with 307 yards and four touchdowns. On defense, junior linebacker Jordan Wescott leads with 29 tackles, including six tackles-for-loss.

After Saturday, the Panthers are back on the road to face SAA rival Sewanee, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. in Sewanee, Tenn. BSC is off the week of Oct. 12 and returns home Oct. 19 to host Millsaps at 1 p.m.
