Panthers post big win with 42-0 shutout of Berry on the road
ROME, Ga.—Birmingham-Southern scored seven touchdowns, including three in the second quarter alone, en route to a 42-0 shutout of Berry College, Saturday afternoon at Darlington School Stadium in Rome, Ga.
The Panthers move to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Athletic Association; first-year program Berry falls to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the SAA.
Junior tailback Issac Nichols scored the first touchdown of the game in the first quarter on a seven-yard run, and junior wide receiver Michael Cowan put the next 12 points on the board to open the second quarter on 37- and 26-yard passes from senior quarterback Tyson Beacham. Freshman Evan Kasian made a 10-yard run to close out the scoring in the first half. All four of senior Ryan Laughlin's extra point kicks were good, giving BSC a 28-0 lead to take to the locker room at halftime.
Freshman tailback Samir Usman got in on the action in the third quarter, scoring on a seven-yard run, and sophomore tailback Teddre Williams scored in the fourth quarter on a 53-yard run for the final touchdown of the game. Laughlin was again on the mark for both kicks.
The Panthers racked up 457 yards of offense with 309 rushing and 148 passing, and had 19 first downs to Berry's 11. Beacham was 8-15 with 129 yards and two touchdown passes, and Kasian led with 110 yards rushing on nine carries. Cowan had 93 yards receiving on five catches. Junior Austin Hansard led the defense with eight tackles (five solo), while junior Connor Shannon had two of BSC's three sacks (junior Wesley Hansard had the other). Junior Ty Keenum made two fumble recoveries.
BSC returns home next weekend for Homecoming and Senior Day 2013, hosting Rhodes on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m. on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.
