Panthers return home this weekend to face Berry

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—After two road games, the Birmingham-Southern football team returns home this Saturday to host Berry College in a Southern Athletic Association match-up, kicking off at 1 p.m. on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.

The Panthers are 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the SAA after an exciting 16-14 victory on the road last week against Millsaps. The Vikings are 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league play, having beaten Hendrix last week, 46-24, at home in Rome, Ga. Saturday's game will be the second meeting between BSC and Berry, as the Vikings are a second-year program. The Panthers won last year in Rome, 42-0.

BSC's offense is manned by freshman quarterback Mickey Courtney. In six games this season he is 72-118 with 871 yards and five touchdowns, as well as no interceptions. One of his primary targets has been senior wide receiver Michael Cowan, who has three touchdown catches and 299 yards. Sophomore tailback Samir Usman leads the charge on the ground with six rushing touchdowns, while senior Joe Moultrie leads in yardage with 683 as well as five scores.

Senior defensive back LaPrintence Gunn owns 47 total tackles (41 unassisted) to lead the BSC defensive effort. He also has a team-high three interceptions and three fumble returns. Senior Wesley Hansard leads with 4.5 sacks and seven tackles-for-loss, and senior Devante Smith has a team-high five pass break-ups.

Sophomore quarterback Dale Jackson is at the helm of the Berry offense, with 1,420 yards and 15 touchdowns, as well as eight picks. Sophomore receiver Chris Lilly leads with six touchdown receptions and 556 yards, while the Vikings have scored only one rushing touchdown (compared to BSC's 13). Sophomore lineback Matt Farinella leads the defense with 57 tackles (48 unassisted), while sophomore linebacker Preston Stewart has made eight sacks.

Saturday's game will feature live video streaming with play-by-play by Landrum Roberts as well as a free game tracker.


For fans attending Saturday's game, please be advised that, due to the annual Magic City Classic football game at Legion Field, traffic around the BSC campus will be extremely heavy. Please plan for extra travel time. Also be advised that the campus's rear entrance on 8th Avenue West will be open and available to use before and after the game.
