Football returns home for season finale against No. 19 Centre

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern football team returns home this Saturday, Nov. 15, for the final game of the season, hosting Southern Athletic Association champion and 19th-ranked Centre College at 1 p.m. on Battle Field at Panther Stadium. It will be Senior Day for the 25 members of BSC's senior class.

This will be the eighth meeting between the two teams since BSC re-started football in 2007, with Centre holding a 6-1 record against the Panthers. The Colonels won last season in Danville, Ky., 53-19, while BSC won in 2012, also in Danville, 45-14.

BSC is 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the SAA entering this weekend's contest, while Centre, ranked 19th by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and 21st by D3football.com, is undefeated at 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the SAA. The Colonels have already clinched at least a share of the 2014 SAA title, but a win on Saturday will make them the outright champion.

The Panthers are coming off their bye week after having lost to Rhodes in Memphis, 20-10, Nov. 1. Freshman quarterback Mickey Courtney has seven touchdowns on the season as well as 1,339 yards with 108 completions on 183 pass attempts. Sophomore tailback Samir Usman has scored six times, racking up 578 yards on 134 carries, and senior wide receiver Michael Cowan leads with three touchdown catches.

Senior LaPrintence Gunn leads the BSC defense with 57 tackles, and ranks second in the SAA with 50 solo tackles. He is also tied for first in the SAA with four interceptions. Senior Wesley Hansard leads the Panthers with 4.5 sacks, and senior Devante Smith leads with six pass breakups.

Centre is led by senior quarterback Heath Haden with 20 touchdowns and 1,693 yards. Sophomore running back Nolan Coulter leads with 10 rushing touchdowns and 1,060 yards, and sophomore wide receiver Max Mazza leads with seven touchdowns and 830 yards receiving.
