Panthers travel to LaGrange to open 2015 season under the lights

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The 2015 version of the Birmingham-Southern football team opens its season this Saturday, Sept. 5, facing LaGrange College at 6 p.m. ET in Callaway Stadium in LaGrange, Ga.

BSC leads the series between the teams, 4-3. BSC had won four straight before last season's 34-28 double overtime loss on Battle Field at Panther Stadium. Saturday marks the seventh straight year that the two programs have faced off in BSC's season opener.

"I've been really pleased with the team's progress during preseason camp, and we always look forward to playing LaGrange to open the season," Head Coach Eddie Garfinkle said. "As always this will be a good test for our guys, especially this year with so many new faces on the field. LaGrange is always a formidable opponent and we hope to set the tone for the season with a strong showing on Saturday."

The Panthers will field a relatively young team this season, returning only five offensive and one defensive starter from 2014. BSC went 3-7 last season, with a 3-3 mark in the Southern Athletic Association. On offense the Panthers return senior offensive linemen Jacob Miller and Nick Maxey, senior wide receiver Daniel Lopera, junior halfback Jesse Handlon, and sophomore quarterback Mickey Courtney. Courtney saw action in nine of 10 games last year, throwing seven touchdowns with 1,353 yards.

The defense's lone returning starter is junior Sidarius Gotell, who moved from nickel to cornerback in the spring. He recorded 24 tackles last season, including 14 solo tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-losses, a sack, three pass break-ups, and a fumble recovery.

Senior kicker/punter Hagen Mancuso also returns this year. He punted for over 2,000 yards last season, averaging 36.7 yards with 15 punts inside the 20-yard line. He was also 4-7 on field goal attempts.
