Football Holds Off Sewanee for 21-16 Win

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Birmingham-Southern football team picked up its first win of the season Saturday afternoon in a 21-16 victory over Southern Athletic Association rival Sewanee on the road. The Panthers (1-2) outrushed Sewanee 234-173 in the win.

 

Kerrigan Pennington (Wagarville, Ala./Washington County HS) finished with a game-high 148 rushing yards, and a team-high 103 passing yards.  Defensively, Cole Murphy (Gaylesville, Ala./Gaylesville HS) earned a game-high 10 tackles, including one sack for a loss of five yards.

 

Sewanee (0-3) scored first, but the Panthers responded with a 26-yard touchdown run by Pennington. BSC scored two unanswered touchdowns before the Tigers got back on the board.  Daniel Lopera (Kennesaw, Ga./Mount Paran Christian School) caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Pennington and the Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC) ran 11 yards to the endzone.

 

The Tigers then scored two unanswered touchdowns of their own, but BSC held them off for the win.

 

BSC returns home on Saturday, Sept. 24 to host Washington University.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
