BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After fighting back to tie the game before halftime, the Birmingham-Southern football team could not overcome a tough third quarter and fell 41-28 on the road at Southern Athletic Association rival Millsaps College Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers (1-6, 1-4 SAA) won in the air, out passing Millsaps 210-92.
Kerrigan Pennington (Wagerville, Ala./Washington County HS) finished with a game-high 174 passing yards with two touchdowns. One of his primary targets on the day, Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC), earned a game-high 99 receiving yards.
The Panthers first score was on an 8-yard run by Samir Usman (Smyrna, Ga./McCallie School) with 1:23 on the clock in the second quarter. When Millsaps fumbled the ensuing kickoff, BSC took over on the Majors 18-yard line.
Marcus Young (Lawrenceville, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian School), who had a big day, rushed for five yards and then 13 to earn his first collegiate touchdown with 38 seconds left in the second quarter to help tie the game up before halftime. He led the team in rushing yards (53) and grabbed three passes for 27 total yards.
Watkins earned the team's last two touchdowns on passes from Pennington. The last was a 79-yard grab.
Cole Murphy (Gaylesville, Ala./Gaylesville HS) led the defense with seven total tackles, all solo.
The Panthers host Rhodes next for their homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
