LAGRANGE, Ga. – Birmingham-Southern football dropped its season opener 29-14 on the road at LaGrange College Saturday night.
Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS) threw for a game-high 276 yards. Robert Shufford (McKenzie, Ala./McKenzie HS) rushed 35 yards for the Panthers' first touchdown of the season in the second quarter. And Mike Benning (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor School) caught a 22 yard pass from Oakes to cap off an 83 yard drive in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, Ivan Villageois (Montgomery, Ala/Saint James School) led with a team-high six tackles, five solo. Four Panthers earned five tackles on the day. Mike O'Driscoll (Roswell, Ga./Centennial HS) earned five solo tackles, three for a loss of 12 yards, including a sack.
BSC opens at home on Saturday, Sept. 14 against Huntingdon College. It will be the 10th annual Wesley Cup. BSC leads the series 5-4 all-time. The Panthers brought the cup home last season after defeating Huntingdon on the road. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in Krulak Stadium.
