Panthers slip late, fall to Sewanee 57-52

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Sewanee (5-16) Tigers began the game tonight with a 5-0 run and they ended the game on another, narrowly defeating the Birmingham-Southern (10-12) Panthers, 57-52.

After starting the game down 5-0, the Panthers clawed back into the lead, taking a 23-16 lead into halftime.  Neither team shot particularly well with BSC hitting only 8-of-25 field goal attempts in the half.  Only one of those was a three point shot.  Fortunately for the Panthers, the Tigers did no better shooting just 29-percent for the half.

While the Panthers’ numbers improved just slightly in the second half, up from 32- to 42-percent, the Tigers caught comparative fire.  Sewanee hit 14-of-19 shots in the second half for 74-percent.  The volume of shots and Sewanee’s 14 turnovers kept the game close.

The Tigers pushed their second half lead to as many as seven, 46-39, with 5:45 remaining.  The Panthers surged over the next four minutes, outscoring Sewanee 13-6 and retying the game 52 with 1:07 left on the clock.  Four different Panthers scored over the stretch, but it would be the last points BSC would score in the game.  The Tigers closed the game on a 5-0 run to clinch the home win, 57-52.

Aaron Parr led the Panthers with 11 points and two rebounds.  Roger Williams pulled down a team high five rebounds.  Sewanee’s Ben Pursell led all scorers with 16 points and 16 rebounds, 14 of which came on the defensive end of the floor.

The Panthers travel to Atlanta to take on Oglethorpe University on Sunday afternoon.  Tipoff with the Petrels is set for noon central time.
