ATLANTA – The BSC Panthers got off to a slow start today at Oglethorpe, scoring just 18 points in the first half, and fell 72-66 to the Stormy Petrels. The loss drops the Panthers to 10-13 on the season while Oglethorpe improves to 16-7.
The Petrels held the Panthers to just 7-of-30 shooting in the first half and built their halftime lead to 32-18. Oglethorpe seemed poised to cruise to an easy home victory, but the Panthers were not ready to throw in the the towel just yet. In the second half the Panthers’ offense woke up and cut the Petrel lead down to just two points with 1:07 remaining.
The second half saw the Panthers shooting improve to over 57-percent going 16-of-28 from the floor. The Petrels were only able to hang on thanks to solid free-throw shooting in the closing minutes. Oglethorpe’s last field goal came with 2:17 left in the game with the Petrels up, 68-62. BSC hit two back-to-back layups to cut the lead to two after trailing by as many 18, but they were never able to gain a lead. The Petrels hit all their free-throws down the stretch and all four Panther attempts found nothing but rim.
BSC was led by #Roger Williams# with 13 points and nine rebounds. #Aaron Parr# finished right behind Williams at 12 points and five rebounds and #Nathan West# had 11 points and three rebounds, rounding out those in double-figures. Oglethorpe’s Todd Ward outpaced all scorers with 27 points and 11 rebounds on the day.The Panthers will return to Bill Battle on Wednesday for the final home game of the 2008-09 season as they host the Bearcats of Rust College at 7:00 p.m.
