BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The BSC (2-0) men’s basketball team defeated the Huntingdon College (1-1 ) Hawks, 95-82 in the final game of the 2008 Black Tie Club Classic. For their work over the weekend, Aaron Parr and Michael Rebarchak were both named to the All-Classic Team, with Parr taking MVP honors.
The Panthers jumped out to a 14-5 lead at the 15:25 mark, prompting Huntingdon to take a time out. Huntingdon tried to dig out of the hole for the rest of the half, but never got closer than three points. The pace remained hectic for the full 20 minutes, but the Panther lead never got into double-digits. They would take a five-point, 50-45, lead into the break.
The Panthers shot 68-percent from the floor, going 17-of-25, to the Hawks 14-of-32 (44-percent). BSC went 4-7 from three-point range, two of which came off the bench from Nathan West. West went 3-of-5 from the floor and 2-2 from the line to net 10 in the frame. Aaron Parr had 15 at the break due largely to his 6-of-7 performance from the free-throw line.
The Hawks tied the game at 71 with just over 10 minutes to go in the game. The Panthers were only able to pull away in the final minutes. All-Classic team member Michael Rebarchak blocked a three point attempt and the resulting bucket on the other end from Wheeler Flemming and the foul put the finally put the lead into double-figures. The Panthers were then able to shoot foul shots to the end to arrive at the final margin.
BSC was led by Classic MVP Aaron Parr’s 26 points. Nathan West netted 17 points and 8 rebounds while Rebarchak added 14 and 7 to round out those in double-figures. The Panthers shot 59-percent on the day, going 29-of-49 from the floor; 42-percent from three and 67-percent from the line. Huntingdon shot 44-percent from the floor, 29- from behind the arc, and 83-percent from the free throw line.
‘Southern will be on the road this Wednesday, November 19, as they travel to LaGrange College for a battle of the Panthers in LaGrange, Georgia. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The Dallas Crusaders defeated the Sewanee Tigers 44-42 in the first game this afternoon. The win improves UD to 1-1 while Sewanee falls to 0-2 on the season. Dallas’s Peter Popovich and Sewanee’s Bradley Paterson were both named to the All-Classic Team along with Jeremy Pittman and Doug Murray from Huntingdon and BSC’s Michael Rebarchak and Classic MVP Aaron Parr.
