Size, quickness and skill highlight Men’s Basketball recruiting class

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Birmingham Southern College Men’s Basketball Coach Mitch Cole announced his 2008-09 recruiting class today, adding six new players to the Panther program for the upcoming season.

“Recruiting players with size, quickness and skill has always been a priority for us,” said Cole. “With last year’s team having 13 freshmen, adding a few transfers should provide some experience to a young team. Our freshmen are also very talented. Each of these guys has shown that high achievement in the classroom and success on the basketball court are not mutually exclusive ideas.”

Despite losing its top two scorers from last season, the Panthers return the majority of last year’s  freshman-laden team. With the added firepower, BSC hopes to improve on an impressive 13-12 record and climb the ladder in the SCAC and NCAA Division III.

“We know this is still a work in progress,” Cole continued. “Starting from scratch is never easy and there will always be roadblocks. But we are building a program one recruit, one practice and, hopefully, one win at a time.”

Here is a look at the 2008-09 BSC men’s basketball recruiting class:

Tyler Marsh
6-0 – 175 – Jr. – Guard – Birmingham, Ala./UAB
“Being a coach’s son, [UAB Associate Coach Donnie Marsh] Tyler is comfortable doing whatever his team needs to win,” said Cole. “His basketball IQ, quickness and unselfishness will fit very well with our up-tempo style of play. We are excited to have him in our program.”

Dominic Whicher
6-10 – 250 - So. – F/ C – Luxembourg
“Dominic is a typical European forward who not only will demand attention in the paint, but can step out and make the three-point shot as well,” said Cole. “He has a good feel for the game and should make an immediate impact with his size, skill and ability to change shots defensively.”

Mikey Kline
6-7 – 215 – Fr. – F – Anniston, Ala./White Plains HS
“Mikey is a diamond in the rough,” said Cole. “He is a versatile forward who led White Plains to the Final Four in Birmingham last season. He has a nice shooting touch, and can score, rebound and defend around the basket. He brings size and skill to our forward spot.”

Tyler Cerone
5-10 – 170 – Fr. – G – Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity HS
“Tyler is a winner!” said Cole. “An excellent shooter, he can play either guard position and knows how to run a team. He is the all-time leading scorer at Blessed Trinity and helped his team achieve tremendous success against top-flight competition.”

Isiah Doaty
5-10 - 175 – So. – G – Bevill State CC
“Isiah grew up coming to our summer basketball camp and has worked to make himself an outstanding player,” said Cole. “He brings quickness and athleticism to the backcourt and will give the opposing guards fits with his tenacious defensive play.”

Lukas Fox
6-0 – 170 – Fr. – G – Baton Rouge, La./Episcopal HS
“Lukas is a combo guard who has the ability to score and get the ball to the open man,” said Cole. He played on a very successful high school team and is used to winning.”
