Jonus’ three at the buzzer seals Panthers’ tenth win, 94-91

Box Score

The Panthers won in thrilling fashion Wednesday night, defeating Asbury College 94-91 on a three-pointer at the buzzer from Jasen Jonus. The win is the Panthers’ tenth of the season, putting them at 10-1 on the season. The Eagles fell to 8-6.

BSC’s shooting started as cold as the weather, allowing the Eagles to build as high as a five-point lead in the first half. Luckily for the Panthers they were able to get the shots to start falling as the half progressed. #Wheeler Flemming# sparked a 9-0 run with 8:06 remaining which put the Panthers up nine, 38-29. The back-and-forth continued for the final minutes of the half, but the Panthers took a four-point lead into the locker room, 53-49, thanks to a #Nathan West# three in the final minute.

The Eagles came out of the break and closed the gap again four minutes into the half and the back-and-forth continued the rest of the way. #Hart Ahumada# tied the score for the ninth time of the game with a free throw with 11:43 remaining, but the Eagles scored on their next possession and kept that lead until just 1:48 remaining in the game when #Blaise White# scored the old-fashioned three-point-play to tie the game at 87. The Panthers retook the lead twice at 89-87 (1:12 left) and 91-89 with 13 seconds left. The Eagles scored a quick layup to tie the game again at 91. With five seconds left #Blaise White# drove the floor and dished to #Jasen Jonus#, who nailed the game-winning three as time expired. It was the Panthers’ only made three-point shot of the second half.

There were six Panthers in double-figures tonight as Jonus led the Panthers with 14 points on the night. #Aaron Parr# scored 13, #Blaise White# and #Wheeler Flemming# scored 11, and #Nathan West# and #Isiah Doaty# each had ten. Brian Johnson led the Eagles with a game-high 22 points. The Panthers shot 47 percent for the game (33-of-71) from the floor, 32 percent (8-of-25) from three, and 87 percent (20-of-23) from the foul line. They outrebounded the Eagles 45 to 31.

The Panthers will be on the road this weekend as they travel to take on the Lynx of Rhodes College in SCAC play. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Mallory Gymnasium in Memphis. Any changes to the schedule due to the impending winter storm will be posted at as soon as they are made.
