BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The BSC men’s basketball team struggled early, but recovered in the second half to take the 95-86 victory over the visiting Atlanta Christian Chargers in their final non-conference game of the 2009-10 season. With the win, the Panthers improve to 12-1 while the Chargers fall to 10-9.
The Panthers’ offense had trouble getting going early on. After jumping out 6-0, ‘Southern surrendered the lead and did not regain it in the half. Fortunately, they never trailed by more than 12 in the frame and were able to pull the game back within reach. A heads-up play by #Jasen Jonus#, drawing the three-shot foul as time expired, allowed the Panthers to go into the break tied at 39.
The Panthers came out of the break breathing fire, determined to get back in control of the game. They jumped out again, this time 7-0 to start half, when AC called a time out to stop the bleeding. The Panther lead climbed as high as 12 at 13:22 thanks to a jumper from #Patrick Price#. The Chargers were unable to retake their first half lead.
#Aaron Parr# led the Panthers with a season high 21 points on the night. #Jasen Jonus# and #Wheeler Flemming# also added double-figures to the Panther line with 18 and 11 points respectively. BSC shot 54 percent from the floor for the game, going 34-of-63. They shot 41 percent from three and 65 from the foul line. For their part, the Chargers shot 50 percent from the floor, 62 percent from three and 73 from the line. The Panthers out-rebounded ACC 43-25 in the game.The Panthers have now completed their non-conference schedule and will resume SCAC-play this weekend as they make their first of two western swings, traveling to Colorado College on Friday before facing Austin College on Sunday. Game times are 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Central time.
