GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Birmingham-Southern men’s basketball closed the 2009-10 season with a 92-82 loss at DePauw. The loss drops the Panthers into a tie atop the Eastern Division standings with the Tigers.
They finish the season with a 20-5 overall record, the best record in the SCAC, and 11-5 in the SCAC East. DePauw and Centre will share the division title with BSC thanks to identical 11-5 conference records.
‘Southern led by as many as nine points in the first half, but couldn’t hold on to the advantage going into the haltime break down one, 38-37.
The game remained close halfway through the second period. But the Tigers, up two following a free throw from #Jasen Jonus#, went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game, 65-53. The Panthers did not get closer than eight the rest of the way thanks, in large part, to DePauw’s free throw shooting down the stretch. The Tigers hit 27 of their 33 attempts from the foul line in the game.
The Panthers were led by #Aaron Parr# with 19 points followed closely by #Jasen Jonus# with 18. Tony James led the Tigers with 17 points on the day. As a group, the Panthers shot 48 percent from the floor, going 28-of-58. They went 8-for-27 (47 percent) from three-point range and 18-of-27 from the free throw line for 67 percent. The Panthers still close the 2009-10 season with their best record since joining Division III, posting a perfect 14-0 record in Bill Battle Coliseum. That is the first time since joining the NCAA, Division I or III, that a Panther basketball team has accomplished that feat. They have won their first division title since joining the SCAC in the first season they were eligible to do so, even though the school’s continued provisional status in Division III precludes them from any post-season play.
