Birmingham-Southern Men's Basketball to Tip Off 2009-2010 Season Nov. 16th
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern Men's Basketball Team will begin the 2009-2010 season on Monday, Nov. 16th at 7:00 pm in Bill Battle Coliseum taking on Lagrange College out of Georgia in what will be the first game of the season for both teams.
Head Coach Mitch Cole is optimistic going into year number 3 of BSC's 4 year transition into NCAA Division III. "We are glad the season is finally here. It's been a long offseason and our players are ready to play against another colored jersey! Our early games will be a good test to see where we are."
Cole feels the BSC program is headed in the right direction and has been impressed with the mentality of the players this year. "We are making progress in all areas, and our student-athletes are beginning to take ownership of the program. Many of our players have invested time and energy into improving their skills on the court and creating a strong bond with their teammates. This is a determined group of guys who really want to succeed on and off the court."
Cole hopes the Panther's running and pressing attack will help develop quality depth at every position. With several returning players and a host of talented newcomers, BSC hopes to wear down its opponents by creating a high speed tempo. "We feel that playing multiple players and several combinations make it hard for the other team to prepare. We want to attack for 40 minutes and may play as many as 15 players any given night. We might have to give the statistician a raise!"
The Panthers follow the home opener vs Lagrange with home games in Bill Battle on Nov. 20 vs U. of the Ozarks (4pm) and Pensacola Christian on Nov. 21 (6pm). BSC will then host SCAC rivals and Div. III powers Centre College, KY (Dec. 4) and Depauw, IN on (Dec. 6).
