Panthers dominate, top Centre 53-44 in SCAC opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern Panthers defeated the visiting Centre College Colonels, for the first time in program history, 53-44 in the conference opener for both teams.  The win keeps the Panthers undefeated at 5-0, and 1-0 in SCAC play.  Centre falls to 1-4, 0-1 on the year.


The Panthers jumped out early, scoring the game’s first eleven points.  Centre was unable to get anything going against the stiff Panther defense until well into the half.  #Aaron Parr# got things going with a three from the top of the key and capped the run two-and-a-half minutes later with a pair of foul shots. 


The Colonels cut the Panther lead down to six with just under five minutes in the half, but the Panthers continued their pressure and rebuilt the lead to nine at the half, 29-20.


The Panthers came out in the second half and quickly added to their lead as Parr again tapped a three from the corner.  The lead climbed as high as 14 three times.  The Panthers’ only offensive dry period came at one of those times.  BSC led 45-31 with 9:04 remaining and then the Colonels made their run.


The defending SCAC champions were not going to give up without a fight, and used an 8-0 run to cut the Panther lead down to six with just under four minutes to play.   ‘Southern  went over six minutes without a point scored.  Parr took command again and snapped the streak with a layup with 2:40 remaining to put BSC’s lead back to eight, 47-39 and closed the door on the Colonels.


Parr led the Panthers with 19 points on the night, including going a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.  #Patrick Price# added two from the line as well to maintain the Panthers flawless 10-10 shooting from the line for the game.  #Jasen Jonus# continued his strong offensive output adding ten points of his own as the only other Panther in double-figures.


BSC will return to the hardwood on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as they play the second game of another SCAC double-header, this time with the DePauw University Tigers.
