BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern Panthers played forty solid minutes of basketball this afternoon to remain unbeaten in SCAC-play, defeating the visiting DePauw University Tigers 84-68. The win improves the Panthers to 6-0 and 2-0 in conference play while the Tigers take their first loss of the season at 5-1 and 1-1.
The opening minutes lived up to the game’s billing, with both teams swapping early buckets. The game remained neck-and-neck through the first four minutes. The Panthers went on their first big run at the 15:59 mark with a 12-2 run on the Tigers that put BSC up 24-14 with twelve minutes in the half. The Tigers were never able to get back into the game.
The Panthers defense remained stiff, holding the Tigers to just 36-percent shooting in the half. The Panthers, by contrast, shot 50-percent from the floor, including five three-point baskets. The Panthers took a 44-30 lead into the break.
Coming out of the halftime, the Panthers scored the first five points to extend their lead out to 49-30 before the Tigers got their first score of the half over three minutes into the period. The game was never closer than ten again. The Panthers handled every surge the Tigers attempted and kept the game from getting away, taking their second conference win of the season.
#Jasen Jonus# led the way offensively for the Panthers with 16 points on the day. #Aaron Parr# and #Patrick Price# joined him in double-figures with 10 points each. The Panthers shot 54-percent for the game, going 28-of-52 from the floor and 8-of-22 from three (36-percent). The Tigers went 21-of-52 from the floor (41-percent) and 10-of-25 from three (40-percent). Both teams were solid from the line. BSC shot 87-percent (20-of-23) while DePauw went 16-of-20 for 80-percent.The Panthers will be off until the weekend when they will travel to Montgomery to face cross-state rival Huntingdon College in a 3 p.m. matchup with the Hawks on Saturday.
