BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern Panthers defeated the Rust College Bearcats 99-84 in the final game before the Christmas Holidays. The win maintains the Panthers’ perfect record heading into the break at 8-0. With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 4-7 on the season.
‘Southern held Rust to 51-percent for the half while putting up a 59-percent mark of their own, including a 15-0 run before the end of the half. A three from #Blaise White# with 7:31remaining sparked the run and capped it two minutes later with a jumper from #Roger Williams# giving the Panthers a 47-30 lead. The Panthers continued their hot shooting from beyond the arc, hitting ten threes in the first frame to build a 15-point lead going into halftime up 55-40.
The Panthers were able to maintain their lead throughout the second half despite several streaks from the Bearcats. Rust got back to within nine twice, before BSC retook control and put the game away.
#Jasen Jonus# led offensive production for BSC scoring a career-high 27 points on the night, including seven three pointers. #Roger Williams#, and #Blaise White# also scored in double figures with eleven and ten points respectively. The Panthers shot a combined 51-percent from the floor, going 35-of-68. They were 54-percent from behind the three-point arc at 15-of-28, and 82-percent from the free throw line at 14-of-17 for the game. They were out-rebounded by the Bearcats 35-30.The Panthers will be off until the New Year as they will travel to Atlanta for a New Year’s Day meeting with the Petrels of Oglethorpe University. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
