BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern basketball team won its fifth straight game with a 70-56 victory over Rhodes, Saturday evening in Bill Battle Coliseum. The Panthers have now won 23 straight home games, a streak dating back to the end of the 2008-09 season.
BSC moves to 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the SCAC; Rhodes falls to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
The teams traded leads six times in the first half alone, with the Lynx leading by as much as seven, 22-15, at the 10:08 mark, and BSC edging out to a 12-point 36-24 lead at the half.
The Panthers kept a double-digit lead for the first nine minutes of the second half before Rhodes chipped away at the margin, cutting it to four, 50-46, with nine minutes left to play. BSC responded with nine straight points, however, to go back up by 13, and kept a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game.
Seniors Patrick Price and Mark Messenger each led BSC with 13 points, while sophomore Kevin Kegarise posted 12 points. Sophomore Zac Richards led with 10 rebounds.
John Dunavant led the Lynx with 16 points. Josh Arant and Theo Hartwell led the team with five rebounds each.
BSC shot 46.7 percent (21-of-45) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from three-point range, and 75.9 percent (22-of-29) at the free throw line; Rhodes shot 40 percent (18-of-45) overall, 33.3 percent (6-of-18) on three-pointers, and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) at the line.
The Panthers out-rebounded the Lynx, 31-27, and committed seven fewer turnovers with 11.
BSC is on the road this week, stepping out of conference to take on new Division III member New Orleans, Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in New Orleans, La.
