JACKSON, Miss.—Led by junior Jasen Jonus and sophomore Zac Richards with 13 points each, the Birmingham-Southern men’s basketball team defeated Millsaps College on the road, 66-58, Friday evening. The Panthers have now won seven straight games, moving to 13-1 overall and 7-1 in SCAC play; the Majors fall to 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
BSC led for the majority of the game, with the exception of a six-minute span in the middle of the first half when Millsaps led by as much as eight. But the Panthers put together a 14-1 run to take back the lead for good, and led by as much as 14 before taking a 37-25 lead into halftime.
The Panthers maintained their lead for the entirety of the second half, and achieved their largest lead of the game, 59-43, with 8:29 left on the clock. The Majors made a 15-5 run after that, cutting it to six, 64-58, with 2:33 left, but BSC held them off for the eventual eight-point win.
Jonus and Richards led the team with 13 points apiece, followed by sophomore Kevin Kegarise with 10 points. Richards also led with eight rebounds, and senior Patrick Price led with two assists and four steals.
Both teams shot fairly even, with BSC hitting 41.2 percent and Millsaps hitting 41.9 percent from the field. The Panthers shot 40 percent from three-point range, while the Majors shot 30 percent; BSC shot 66.7 percent from the free throw line to Millsaps’ 69.6 percent showing.
BSC held the advantage in rebounding, 33-28, and committed five fewer turnovers than Millsaps with 16.
The Panthers stay on the road for their next game, traveling to face Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., on Sunday at 3 p.m.
