Men's Basketball voted second place in Eastern Division in SCAC Preseason Poll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—In exclusive balloting by SCAC men's head basketball coaches, Birmingham-Southern was tabbed second in the Eastern Division in the 2010-11 Preseason Poll.

Defending league champion Centre College and Trinity University were voted preseason favorites to capture the SCAC Eastern Division and Western Division championships respectively for the second consecutive year.

In the closest SCAC preseason poll since 2008-09, Centre headlined the annual poll of head coaches and is favored to win the SCAC title. Head coach Greg Mason and his Colonels tallied five of 12 first place votes to go along with 111 points to just barely take the top spot.

Birmingham-Southern College (110 points, 5 first place votes) and DePauw University (104 points, 1 first place vote) look to give Centre all it can handle in the East. Rounding out the division was Oglethorpe University (82 points, 1 first place vote), Rhodes College (28 points) and Sewanee: The University of the South (12 points).

The Colonels look for the program's sixth SCAC championship in 2010-11. Centre won league titles in 1991-92, 1992-93, 2006-07, 2008-09 and 2009-10.

In the SCAC Western Division, Trinity tallied 90 points while Austin College (59 points) and Colorado College (59 points) follow Trinity. Colorado College head coach Andy Partee and his Tigers look to make the SCAC tournament for the first time since joining the league prior to the 2007-08 season.

Trinity looks for its first SCAC championship since the 2004-05 season and the program's sixth title in the SCAC era (since 1991-92). The Tigers won three straight titles from 2002-03 through 2004-05. They also won titles in 1999-00 and 1997-98.

Austin College will aim for its fourth straight appearance in the SCAC postseason tournament but will have considerable competition from Southwestern University (56 points), which was just three points behind the Kangaroos in the poll.

Rounding out the rest of the Western Division is Hendrix College (41 points), and 2011 SCAC tournament host Millsaps College (40 points).
