MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Led by senior Jasen Jonus with 19 points, the 22nd-ranked Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season this evening on the road with an 81-79 victory against Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala.
The Hawks led for most of the first half and held a 47-41 lead at halftime. The Panthers finally took over the lead at the 12-minute mark of the second half, and held on for the two-point victory.
The Panthers move to 1-0 with first-year head coach Chris Graves at the helm.
Jonus led all players with his 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Junior Kevin Kegarise and sophomore Griffin Schamp also added 13 points each, and senior Caleb Lee recorded 10 points. Junior Zac Richards led on the boards with seven rebounds, and junior Blaise White dished out four assists.
BSC shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field, 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from three-point range, and 77.4 percent (24-of-31) from the free throw line.
The Panthers open their home slate this Friday, hosting the Black Tie Club Tournament. BSC takes on University of the Ozarks, Friday at 7 p.m., and Berry College, Sunday at 3 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum.
