No. 16 Panthers suffer first loss of season to Centre, 72-65

DANVILLE, Ky.—The No. 16 Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team was handed its first loss of the season Friday evening, falling to Centre College, 72-65, on the road in Danville, Ky.

The Panthers fall to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play; the Colonels move to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC.

Centre led for the entire game, with the exception of four ties, and led by as much as 12 in the first half. The Colonels led 38-28 at halftime, and BSC opened the second half with a 14-4 run to tie it up 42-42. The Panthers stayed close for the next few minutes before Centre pulled away again and kept the advantage for the remainder of the game, eventually winning by seven.

Junior Zac Richards led with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, followed by senior Jasen Jonus with 14 points and junior Blaise White with 10. Jonus also led with five rebounds and five assists.

BSC out-rebounded Centre 34-28, but did not shoot as well as past games, hitting 26-of-57 (45.6 percent) from the field, 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from three-point range, and 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) from the free throw line.

The Panthers are on the road again this Sunday, facing Sewanee at 2 p.m. in Sewanee, Tenn.
