BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The No. 14 Birmingham-Southern men's basketball team won its eighth straight game and 38th straight home game this evening with a 92-62 victory against Austin College in Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Panthers move to 15-1 overall and lead the SCAC Eastern Division at 7-1, while the Kangaroos fall to 10-7 overall and 6-2 in the league.
BSC came out shooting to open the game, mounting a quick 8-0 lead in the first 2:25 and never looking back. The Panthers led by 12 by the 14:15 mark, then 20 with 10:51 left in the half. Austin cut it to 13 with 8:38 left, but BSC went back up quickly, leading by as much as 22 before taking a 21-point lead into halftime.
The 'Roos came out in the second half and scored two straight jumpers to cut it to 17, but BSC answered with a three-pointer from junior Kevin Kegarise to go back up by 20. The Panthers kept their large lead for the remainder of the game; the closest Austin came was cutting it to 21 with 4:36 left, but BSC out-scored the 'Roos 15-8 down the stretch for the 30-point victory.
Senior Jasen Jonus led all players with 16 points, followed by freshman Larry Thomas with 13 and senior Caleb Lee with 11. Rebounding was balanced, with Thomas leading with five boards. Junior Blaise White led with six assists and five steals, and junior Zac Richards had two blocks.
For Austin, Josh Saunders led with 12 points, followed by Antoine Thompson with 10. Alen Michael led with eight rebounds.
BSC out-shot Austin in every category, hitting 31-of-64 (.484) for the game, 11-of-29 (.379) from three-point range, and 19-of-27 (.704) from the free throw line. Austin shot 23-of-66 (.348) overall, 4-of-13 (.308) from long-range, and 12-of-19 (.632) at the line.
Austin out-rebounded BSC 48-37 while committing 29 turnovers to BSC's 18.
The Panthers are at home again tomorrow night, hosting University of Dallas at 8 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum.
