BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Larry Thomas scored 17 points and senior Zac Richards added 16 to help Birmingham-Southern to a 68-49 win over Covenant College (10-8) on Senior night Wednesday at Bill Battle Coliseum. Thomas also had eight steals, seven rebounds and three assists.
Birmingham-Southern honored seniors Richards, Kevin Kagarise and Blaise White prior to their final home game. Richards, who scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half, pulled down six rebounds with an assist while Kagarise scored eight points with three assists. White tallied four steals, three assists and three rebounds.
The Panthers improved to 16-7 overall and snapped a three-game losing streak in the process. BSC now turns its attention to a key road weekend in Southern Athletic Association, traveling to Oglethorpe on Friday at 7 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga., and to Berry College on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Rome, Ga.
BSC held a 12-point lead at halftime and never let the Scots get any closer than seven points the rest of the way. Colton McGriff's layup cut the BSC lead to 39-32 with 15:06 to go in the contest.
Leading 51-42, BSC went on a 15-3 run to take a 64-44 lead on a Richards 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3:07 left. BSC later gained its biggest lead of the night at 66-44 on two free throws by Brendan Marschner with 2:43 remaining.
A Thomas layup helped BSC grab a quick 4-0 lead to start the game and held an 8-5 lead following a Thomas 3-pointer with 15:50 left in the first half.
The Panthers endured a five minute scoring drought but managed to trail 9-8 with 11:08 to go in the first half.
Covenant held a 13-10 with 10:11 remaining before BSC outscored the Scots 23-7 to close the half, taking a 33-21 lead into halftime on a Richards layup as time expired.
Birmingham-Southern outrebounded Covenant 37-29 with 16 of its 37 rebounds coming on the offensive end.
McGriff led Covenant with 17 points.
