BSC Men’s Basketball Holds Off Oglethorpe, 77-74
ATLANTA, Ga. -- Larry Thomas scored 25 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds to help the Birmingham-Southern Men's Basketball team earn a 77-74 Southern Athletic Association win at Dorough Fieldhouse on Friday.
The Panthers snapped a three-game conference losing streak, improving to 17-7 overall and 9-4 in the SAA. Oglethorpe fell to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in league play.
Kevin Kagarise followed Thomas with 16 points while Zac Richards added 13 points and four rebounds for the Panthers.
BSC held off a late rally by Oglethorpe that saw the Stormy Petrels go on an 11-0 run to cut a 16-point lead to 76-74 with 11 seconds left in the second half. A Thomas free throw extended the lead to 77-74 with seven seconds left and a 3-point shot by OU's Christian Molinet 3-point shot would not go as time expired.
The second half was full of big runs by both teams. after the Petrels cut the deficit to 45-37, the Panthers went on a 14-0 run to take a 59-37 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers by Thomas with 13:18 left in the second half.
Oglethorpe answered with a 16-0 run of its own to get back to trail 59-54 on a Molinet layup at the 7:06 mark.
A Thomas three gave BSC a 73-56 lead on the end of a 13-2 run with 3:27 remaining to set up Oglethorpe's comeback attempt.
BSC held a 45-35 halftime lead after shooting 62 percent on 18-of-29 shooting before cooling off in the second half with 32 percent.
Molinet led the Petrels with 23 points and three assists while Alex Davis added 17 points and six rebounds and Alex Pitts finished with 12 points
The Panthers travel to Berry College for the regular season finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT) in Rome, Ga.
