ROME, Ga.—Junior Larry Thomas eclipsed the 1,000-point mark of his career in an 87-71 Birmingham-Southern win against Berry College, Friday evening in Rome, Ga. The Panthers now stand at 11-6 overall and 5-2 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Vikings fall to 3-15 overall and 0-7 in SAA play.
Thomas led all players with 25 points and now sits at 1,019 career points in the midst of his junior campaign. He shot 9-13 from the field including 5-8 from beyond the arc.
The game was close for the first 10 minutes, as the teams played to a 16-16 tie at the 10:46 mark. BSC took control after that, though, using a 17-2 run to pull ahead 33-18 at the 7:19 mark. The Panthers led 46-32 at halftime, and the closest the Vikings would come in the second half was cutting it to eight early on. BSC held a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game, winning by 16.
Sophomore John Crain scored 12 points off the bench for the Panthers, and senior Griffin Schamp also recorded 12 points. Senior Schylar Freeman had 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Thomas led with six steals, and three different Panthers led with three assists each.
Hunter Smoak led Berry with 22 points, followed by Owen Jacobs with 20 and Lee McCloud with 12.
The Panthers stay on the road for their next game, facing Ogelthorpe on Sunday at 3 p.m. Eastern in Atlanta.
